Basketry Classes

Enjoy a day long workshop in my "high tech" basketry studio (a.k.a. - my veranda).

It's for anyone who would like to learn to make a basket and/or would like to learn how to use the variety of basketry materials that grow in the fields, hedgerows, gardens and forests here in eastern Ontario.

- Each class starts with a gathering expedition.
- Everyone makes a basket!

Classes are usually held on Sundays, but other days can be arranged for classes of 5 or more students. This class is intended for beginning basket-makers or people wanting to learn how to use the many basketry materials that grow in Eastern Ontario.

The class is typically held from 9 to 4. The first hour or so is spent on a gathering expedition to a nearby wetland. Then we settle down to the basic skills of basket making, and everyone will make a small basket, either bowl shaped or with a handle.

People have taken more than one class to learn different techniques and make different shapes of baskets.

This class is suitable to all ages. In my classes, I have taught both male and female basket-makers of all ages from children to seniors. People who are not comfortable with the prospect of walking in the woods, can arrive at 10. a.m.

I have also taught a class in Christmas decorations in basketry. This too could be arranged.

References are available on request.

What to bring:

  • waterproof footwear

  • garden secateurs or kitchen shears

  • your lunch

  • a sunhat or raingear

  • any materials you may have on hand that you would like to try to incorporate into your basket

The last item is optional  -  all basketry materials are provided or gathered.  A pick up truck is always appreciated!

Usually we have good weather it seems, but there are provisions for bad weather. Usually we end up working outdoors on my large veranda, but there is space indoors by the wood fire for those who prefer.

Cost is $60.00 (Canadian funds) per person, per class, and that includes materials. Prices are adjusted for large groups.
